Here you will find 9 different music challenges to help my students achieve better practice habits while perfecting scales, chords, technique, note reading, sight reading, transposing, intervals and more.
These challenges will help students reach goals and will help them to be more confident in performance.
Every challenge has multiple levels. Some challenges may take 2 or 3 years to complete all the levels. Not all students can participate in every challenge. I wrote down which levels can participate for each challenge.
The students receive weekly incentives for performing their challenges for me. And they receive badges for completing a challenge.
I have created them to be fun and educational with a little bit of competition in mind. They are also designed to compliment the pieces they are to practice each week.
Below is the list of the challenges and how they each one works. They are designed based on the level of each child so as not to pressure them.
Primer, elementary, teen and adult students can participate in this challenge. There are 3 levels to this challenge: Apprentice, Superstar and Master.
The student starts off with apprentice level and they have to be able to read the notes from the flashcards I hold up and find them on the keyboard within 60 seconds. They have to do this 5 weeks in a row perfectly to complete the level.
Each student has 40 weeks to complete this challenge. If they complete the challenge before the end of the 40 weeks, then they can move to the next level.
Within each level the notes get a little bit harder. They receive a badge for every level completed.
Students will only be challenged on the level where they are at. This way, the Primer students can participate.

They must do each scale 3 weeks in a row in the studio at 80 b.p.m. on the metronome before they can move to the next scale.
To complete each wheel faster, they can play 3 scales at a time for their 3 weeks in a row. They get a sticker for every scale they master. Once they complete all 12 scales on the wheel, they will receive a badge and they can move to the next wheel.
Students will only be challenged on the scale level where they are at. This way, the Primer students can participate.

Every student has special techniques that they must follow when playing their pieces. At the beginning of every student book, with the exception of the Primer books and Mini Musicians Program, there are 2 pages that talk about technique for that level.
I also have technique videos that explain how to do those techniques.
The students must apply the proper techniques to their songs each week. When their lesson book is complete, they will receive a badge.
The Primer and Mini Musicians students, ages 4-7, will have 6 techniques that they must perform for me to receive a badge.

This is an exciting challenge as it's a great way to learn how to play your pieces by ear.
I have very easy pieces chosen for this particular challenge. Most of the songs are children's songs: Hot Cross Buns, Mary Had a Little Lamb, Jingle Bells, When the Saints Go Marching In, Happy Birthday, Ode to Joy and much more. There are 12 pieces total.
Each level contains 2 to 3 songs which the student has to transpose in 4 different keys.
The students have 40 weeks to complete each level. If they complete the level before the 40 weeks, they can move to the next level.
Once the student completes each level, they receive a badge.
This challenge is for primer, elementary, teen and adult students. This is an exciting challenge as I get to choose what the bull's eye target is for each piece. This challenge will be used on your regular practice pieces from your lesson books.
Here are some examples of bull's eye targets:
I have many bull's eye target examples. If at any point you don't meet the target, you will need re-do that target the following week.
Once the student completes all 30 bull's eye targets, they will receive a badge.
This challenge is for elementary, teen and adult students only. Each student can choose to play extra pieces from any of the supplemental books or supplemental sheet music from my music library. They must choose pieces and books on their level.
This is a great way for students to play other pieces outside of their lesson book pieces.
Each student needs to play the song following the music language that is in the piece.
The goal is to play it as close to perfect as possible. Sometimes a song can take 2 or 3 weeks to really smooth it out. I will decide when the student is ready to move to the next song.
Once the student completes 40 pieces, they receive a badge.
